The book; an examination? It is a book he claims to despise, but it haunts him. Immersed in this location, quite similar to the location of the original work, he finds that he is not only haunted by the book, but by its’ author and its’ creation as well. Nocturnal visitations, mysterious rooms and lost, vacant wanderings through a landscape of oncoming winter drive him to strange occurrences and an even deeper submergence into himself. Reality and perception bleed into one and the author begins to wonder if these monsters we create are ever content to stay on the page. Do we get the monsters we deserve? Marcus Sedwick has given us another genre-defying, intense and thought-provoking tale. It has a quiet, riveting sense about it; like any good horror story will. But there is a deeply psychological aspect at work here, as it opens up a realm of questions, both about the inner workings of perception and the creative process and the intention of Mary Shelleys’ original Frankenstein. This is quite appropriate and interesting in the th anniversary year of its’ publication.

Travellers long shared history, cultural values, language, customs and traditions make them a self-defined group, and one which is recognisable and distinct. Their culture and way of life, of which nomadism is an important factor, distinguishes them from the sedentary settled population. There are an estimated 25, Travellers in Ireland, making up more than 4, Traveller families. This constitutes approximately 0.
It is estimated that an additional 15, Irish Travellers live in Britain, with a further 10, Travellers of Irish descent living in the United States of America. Travellers, as individuals and as a group, experience a high level of prejudice and exclusion in Irish society. Many have to endure living in intolerable conditions, with approximately one third having to live without access to the basic facilities of sanitation, water and electricity.
This leads to ongoing health problems among the Traveller community. A report of the Health Research Board revealed that Traveller men live, on average, 10 years less than settled men, while Traveller women live on average 12 years less than their settled peers. Discrimination and its effects are a daily feature of Travellers lives. This report presents a comprehensive examination of the situation of the Traveller community and contains significant and convincing proposals for necessary change.
To date, some of the recommendations of this important report have been implemented, but much remains to be done. It is vital that, in the coming years, the various Government agencies responsible, together with the community as a whole, work to ensure the full implementation of all the Task Force Reports recommendations Travellers might then have the experience of being treated and regarded as full, equal citizens of Ireland.

Ecclesiastical provinces and dioceses of Ireland. The high level of religious practice and the historically controversial nature of Catholic influence on Irish society both reflect that unique relationship. Yet a high level of religious practice was not always characteristic of Irish society. Contrary to the popular view that Catholicism embraced the Irish of all classes at all times and was virtually synonymous with being Irish, recent scholars have shown that Catholicism had to be taught aggressively to the majority of the population.
The religious situation was worsened by the Williamite victory of the s and the harsh anti-Catholic penal legislation that followed, resulting in the final political defeat of Catholic Ireland, as well as the attempted eradication of the Irish Catholic church. Although the period during which the intent to actually destroy the church was short-lived and by the s the antiCatholic legislation was no longer enforced, the policy was very destructive, creating severe problems for the church and a great sense of insecurity among the group of men who were charged with trying to hold the outlawed institution together.
